How to Use Lavender Oil in a Diffuser (and How Many Drops)
A few drops of lavender in a diffuser is one of the simplest ways to change the feel of a room. The trick is using the right amount: too little and you barely notice it, too much and the scent becomes heavy. Here is how we use it at home.
How many drops of lavender oil in a diffuser?
For a standard ultrasonic diffuser holding 100–300 ml of water, 3 to 5 drops is plenty. Start with 3 drops in a bedroom or small room, and go up to 5 in a larger living space. More is not better: an overpowering scent quickly becomes tiring and can irritate the eyes and nose.
Step by step
- Fill the diffuser with room-temperature water up to the marked line.
- Add 3–5 drops of oil.
- Switch it on for 30 to 60 minutes, then let the room rest. If your diffuser has an intermittent setting, use it.
- Empty, rinse and wipe the tank regularly so old water and oil don't build up.
Which blend for which moment?
- A quiet evening: our classic Lavender Essential Oil, floral, fresh and gently herbal.
- Mornings and working from home: Lavender & Bergamot brings a bright citrus lift.
- A crisp, fresh room: Lavender & Peppermint. Peppermint is powerful, so start with just 2–3 drops.
- Cosy, woody evenings: Lavender & Sandalwood or Lavender & Frankincense.
Some of our sweeter blends are made for body use rather than diffusing. Each product page says whether a diffuser is suitable, so check it before you start.
Good habits
- Diffuse in a ventilated room, and take breaks rather than running it for hours.
- Keep diffusers out of reach of children, and be careful around pets, especially cats, which are sensitive to essential oils. Leave them a room without scent they can go to.
- If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition, ask a professional before use.
- Essential oils are for external, aromatic use only. Never swallow them.
No diffuser?
Place 1–2 drops on a ceramic aroma stone, or tuck a dried lavender sachet into a drawer or wardrobe for a softer scent that lasts for weeks.
